Why do I need a web site?

Imagine having an advert in every single telephone directory in the world. The reality is even better than that. Instead of being limited to just a few column inches you can have full details and images of your products and services, helplines, answers to frequently asked questions, technical and product support information, just about anything you want, all available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for existing and potential customers to view when they want, not just when your offices are open.

What do I need for web site?

There are 3 main parts to a web site.

  • A message letting people know what you offer.
This should be informative, readable and (usually) accessible to as wide an audience as possible. Unless you are targeting a small and specific group, ignoring visitors who do not have the latest version of a particular browser or requiring them to install additional plug-ins will not help your cause. Our design and optimising sections have more details on this subject.

  • Web space on which to host the site so people can come and visit it.
This space should be capable of supporting additional features allowing you to add interactive facilities such as forms for people to contact you and site searching etc. We have a brief overview on web space on one of the following pages with more details in the hosting section.

  • A domain name.
This is your address on the Internet and should reflect either your organisation's name or purpose, or both. Using a variation of your hosting provider's name such as www.yourISP.com/yourname will not present such a good image to your visitors as having your own. We have included a detailed section on domain names as well as a to see if your preferred name is available.
